Charlie Slavin Research Fund Description

At approximately 9:24 a.m. on Friday, April 19, a University of Maine graduate student was struck by a university vehicle on Long Road at the University of Maine campus in Orono. The student reports that they are at a local hospital with minor injuries.

Emergency services, including the Orono Fire Department, University Volunteer Ambulance Corps, University of Maine Police Department, Orono Police Department and Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

The university vehicle involved in the incident was a Chevrolet Express van. It was being operated by a university employee.

Counseling services and support are available for students, faculty or staff who may have been affected. The Counseling Center can be reached at 207-581-1392 and the Dean of Students Office can be reached at 207-581-1406.

The scene has been cleared and Long Road is now accessible. An investigation is being conducted by the University of Maine Police Department with assistance from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit. The Charlie Slavin Fund was established at the University of Maine Foundation in 2012 for the benefit of the University of Maine, Orono, Maine with a gift from Charlie’s wife, Nancy E. Hall, and many of Charlie’s family, friends and colleagues from across the country after his unexpected death in 2012.

Charlie started his career as a professor of mathematics at UMaine in 1984 and was known for his drive to challenge conventional teaching practices and to reach beyond his own discipline for the benefit of his students and the university. In 1997 Charlie was chosen to become the Director of the Honors Program at UMaine and after successfully transitioning the program to an Honors College in 2002, he was named Dean in 2004. During his 15 years leading Honors at UMaine, Charlie considered himself lucky to have “the best job on campus” and arrived every day with a vision to make Honors a true community of students, faculty, and staff. He went above and beyond the duties of professor and administrator, always arriving to campus early and staying late to attend events, lectures, and student presentations. Charlie worked hard to let his students, colleagues and friends know how much they meant to him, and he was committed to helping others reach their full potential. He was supportive, inquisitive, and passionate about learning, and it is in this spirit that the Charlie Slavin Fund is created.

The Dean of the Honors College shall administer the income from the fund.
