Honors students help feed 20,000 people

At approximately 9:24 a.m. on Friday, April 19, a student was struck by a university vehicle on Long Road at the University of Maine campus in Orono.

Emergency services responded promptly to the scene and the student has been transported to a local hospital. The student’s family has been informed.

Counseling services and support are available for students, faculty or staff who may have been affected. The Counseling Center can be reached at 207-581-1392 or you may call the Dean of Students Office at 207-581-1406.

An investigation is underway and more details will be released when they become available. Our thoughts are with the student and their family.

Long Road has been cleared and is now accessible. Any witnesses to the incident are encouraged to contact Lieutenant Noel Santiago at noel.santiago@maine.edu.

Honors students working to pack meals of beans and rice for children in Nigeria.

On Saturday morning Honors residents helped pack 20,000 meals for Nigerian kids in an End Hunger New England meal-packing event. Students from Colvin, Estabrooke, Balentine and Penobscot Halls packed the meals in 76 minutes, breaking the 2014 record by one minute with fewer students than pervious years. In the event organized by the non-profit Outreach, participants work in assembly-style lines packing as many non-perishable meals as possible. Along with the Pack-Out volunteers, other Honors students joined UMaine in various service projects across campus and Orono, as part of UMaine Welcome Weekend Day of Service. Students helped build a float with the Old Town Rotary for their Polio Plus campaign. Thank you to all who joined us in giving back to the UMaine community and beyond.
