Honors student receives congressional scholarship
Third-year Honors student, Allyson Eslin will work for Senator Angus King’s D.C. office from January to May of 2016, living in the heart of D.C. Eslin’s opportunity was made possible through UMaine’s Peter Madigan Congressional Internship program.
For Eslin, the congressional internship represents an amazing opportunity to develop the skills she needs for her Political Science degree outside of the classroom.
“It’s great to learn about the world from a book or a lecture, but it’s another thing entirely to learn about the world by experiencing and shaping it for the better. Having a University that encourages and fosters learning in these “non-traditional” ways is really a huge part of why so many successful alumni call UMaine home,” she said.
Eslin said her internship will inform her thesis work in a unique way. “I’d already been considering measuring how trust is influence by party affiliation, gender, education, financial status and other metrics – having some anecdotal experiences in Washington may play into how I decide to approach this research when I return home!”
She further said, “The Honors College is a big part of why I received this opportunity. I developed a number of critical thinking, speaking, and writing skills in the Civilizations sequence that have served me well to this day.”
