Honors Celebration Awards

Honors students, their families and advisors gathered in Wells Conference Center for Honors Celebration. The class of 2016 was the 79th class of Honors Graduates from the University of Maine and the 14th class of graduates from the Honors College. There were 87 students recognized for completing a thesis. Additionally Awards were given to underclass Honors students (listed below).


Graduating Senior Abigail Feuka (Wildlife Ecology) received the Honors College Service award, which recognizes one or more graduates of the Honors College for outstanding commitment and contributions to the University of Maine Honors community. The award is supported by gifts from our graduates.


Sarah Elizabeth Dean ‘17 (International Affairs) received the Stanhope Study Abroad Fellowship. The Charles V. Stanhope ‘71 Honors College Study Abroad Fellowship Endowment Fund was established at the University of Maine in 2008. Fellowships shall be awarded to students in the Honors College who study for at least a semester outside the borders of the United States. Preference shall be given to students who graduated from a Maine high school.


Douglas Newton ’19 (Political Science) received the Mark R. Haskell and Katherine Z. Haskell Scholarship. The Mark R. Haskell ‘82 and Katherine Zeitlin Haskell Honors Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Maine Foundation in 2015 to provide scholarship assistance to University of Maine Honors College students, with a preference for students majoring in Political Science.


Isaiah Mansour ’17 (Marine Science) received the Professor Melvin Gershman Scholarship. The Professor Melvin Gershman Scholarship Fund was established at the University of Maine in 1998 with gifts from family, friends, and associates to provide scholarship assistance to meritorious science students enrolled at the University of Maine. Preference shall be given to students in the Honors College whose curriculum includes a strong emphasis in the humanities.


Stanley Small ‘19 (Mechanical Engineering), Kimberly Crowley ‘19 (English), Cody Stevens ‘19 (Civil Engineering), and Chantal Bussiere ‘19 (Ecology & Environmental Science) received the Steinmetz Book Award. The John Ferdinand Steinmetz Memorial Award was established in 1962 through a gift from the family of the late John Ferdinand Steinmetz ’43. This award is given annually to first-year Honors students demonstrating outstanding character and appropriate need.


Natalie Goding ‘17 (Political Science) and Jenya Damsky ‘18 (Studio Art) received the Robert B. Thomson Memorial Thesis Fellowship. The Robert B. Thomson Memorial Awards were established in 1984 by family and friends and are awarded to outstanding Honors College juniors majoring in Political Science and in Art.


Callie Greco ‘18 (Biology) received the Aspirations Scholarship. The Honors College Aspiration Scholarship Fund was established by the University of Maine Foundation in 2002 with a gift from Nancy B. Prisk ’72. The fund shall be used to provide scholarship aid for hard-working students enrolled in the Honors College.
