At approximately 9:24 a.m. on Friday, April 19, a student was struck by a university vehicle on Long Road at the University of Maine campus in Orono.

Emergency services responded promptly to the scene and the student has been transported to a local hospital. The student’s family has been informed.

Counseling services and support are available for students, faculty or staff who may have been affected. The Counseling Center can be reached at 207-581-1392 or you may call the Dean of Students Office at 207-581-1406.

An investigation is underway and more details will be released when they become available. Our thoughts are with the student and their family.

Long Road has been cleared and is now accessible. Any witnesses to the incident are encouraged to contact Lieutenant Noel Santiago at noel.santiago@maine.edu.

Jill Pelto, a 2015 Honors graduate, recently had her artwork featured on the cover of TIME magazine for their July 20, 2020 issue, titled “One Last Chance.” Jill, who studied Studio Art and Earth & Climate Sciences, weaves climate change data into her art. TIME also published an article about Jill and her recent accomplishments – click here to read the article.

This isn’t the first time Pelto’s work has graced the cover of a magazine – in fact, her art appeared on the front and back covers of the 2015 edition of the Honors College’s own annual publication, Minerva. The issue also featured a story on Jill and her work at the time of her graduation. The full 2015 edition of Minerva is available online by clicking here.

Pelto’s 2015 Honors thesis, titled “Art as a Tool to Communicate Science,” reflects upon the history of artists using their media in order to communicate science to the public.
