Feature Friday: James Greenwood ’23

The Honors College’s Feature Friday series highlights an Honors student every Friday and shares a little bit about their experiences in Honors and at the University of Maine.

This week, our feature is on James Greenwood. James is a second-year ecology & environmental sciences major with a concentration in environmental lab and applied sciences and minor in business administration. He is from Lewiston, Maine.

His favorite thing about Honors is how the courses facilitate connections. “I love the chance to connect with other Honors students on a more personal level to discuss the conflicts and values that got us to the society in which we live today. The smaller class size not only ensures that everyone learns, but that we can come together and build a common knowledge for the benefit of ourselves and our communities,” said James.

James’ favorite Honors Civilizations text is Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. He noted that the “text was a fun way to experience criticism of Catholicism, the social class system, and gender roles in medieval Europe.”

He appreciates UMaine’s campus size and how it allows students to feel seen and distinguish themselves. “There is something to be said about feeling like you are not just a number,” said James.

This past summer, James had the opportunity to work for Brad Libby at the Lyle E. Littlefield Ornamentals Trial Garden.

James described the scope of his work. “I got the chance to redesign a juniper garden that was really overgrown. The Juniper had not been trimmed for 25 years, according to Brad, and I was able to add some rock art and fix up an old bench.”
