Hurricane Island
HON 175 Community Building and Engagement is a 1-credit Research Learning Experience that begins with a trip to beautiful Hurricane Island in the week before classes start in the fall, and extends with a one-hour meeting per week through the semester. During our stay on the island, we explore its history, consider the impacts of climate change on Maine’s coastal communities, dip our toes into marine science and aquaculture research, discuss what makes a community and how to build new ones, hike, swim, and more. During the semester, HON 175 consists of in-class meetings and hands-on, community-based projects with local partners such as the Orono Community Garden and Hirundo Wildlife Refuge. More specific information about HON 175 will be coming later this spring!
