Description of Publication:
This piece will follow a young college student who is bisexual and moving through several communities at the college. As she encounters more students, both those who are similar and different from her, she faces some adversity towards her sexual expression. She works to compromise herself with this view while trying not to let it affect her view of herself. Throughout the text she encounters people of different sexualities and genders and reshapes her existing perspective of the world to better fit with what she has experienced.
Out From Under is a series of vignettes that recounts the narrator’s experiences of micro-aggressions and misrecognition as a bisexual person. Throughout the narrator’s time at college, she works to come to an understanding of herself based on the interactions she has with others within and outside of the LGBTQ community, and media, particularly as it interacts with the notion of “the other.” Her understanding is not meant to be seen as complete at the conclusion of the work, but is meant to be read as an ongoing process of finding an way to identify that she can be comfortable with.
