- Why I teach in Honors:
A sociologist in temperament and training, I teach in honors for the unusual and potent mix of rich texts, small class size, exceptional students and a commitment to vigorous learning. This allows me to facilitate a classroom process that puts the development of original thought in counterpoint with the development of good humans. Each time I teach, I learn, allowing me to develop my craft with skill, compassion and self awareness—qualities I also seek in my students.

My philosophy for teaching in honors stems from a broader philosophy of teaching: each student has a unique voice and perspectives that matter. I work to draw out the best in students individually, and in the distinctive, emerging energy of the class. I engage students’ ideas with respect and curiosity, and work toward a collective ethic where both imagination and reason thrive in our classroom.
