Office Hours I’m on campus most days. The easiest way to see me is to send me an email to set up an appointment.
Dr. Julie DellaMattera is an Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education and a preceptor in the Honors College at UMaine. She received her Doctorate in Educational Leadership from UMaine with a focus on early education policy.
Julie has a myriad of early childhood education experiences in both public and private sectors and in profit and non-profit agencies across the State. In all of these jobs, she promotes quality early education as an advocate and role-model for young children and early educators.
At UMaine, Julie encourages future teachers’ self-efficacy, challenging them to take control of their learning. She pushes students to find out who they are and how best they can support all children in their school community. Her favorite class is a 3-week teaching practicum in Pre-K classrooms on the island of Isla Mujeres, Mexico.
Julie is part of the Servant Heart Research Collaborative working with faculty and undergraduate and graduate students in the UMaine Honors College to create a six-part Attachment Theory (AT) Workshop for caregivers of trauma-affected children. The AT Workshop allows Julie to coach and mentor students in the creation of well-researched, trauma-informed curriculum that is having a real and immediate impact in the lives of children and families in Sierra Leone and Haiti. The AT team has been meeting with a coalition of partners to expand the training internationally. Currently, the AT team is collaborating with NGOs in Uganda and Kenya. It is by far the work of which she is most proud.
On a personal note, Julie is a bit of a sci-fi geek, loves live music, and can’t get enough of travelling to interesting and fun places.
