Description of Publication:
As a student organizer, I learned about tension between means and ends in the context of the Real Food Challenge campaign at the University of Maine (RFC UMaine). To focus on the process of student organizing, I introduce a framework called student democratic engagement (SDE)—both in the context of within the RFC UMaine group and between the University of Maine and RFC UMaine. I constructed a narrative of the first three years of the campaign, referring to press as well as my notes, records, and personal journal. I read through the story for SDE indicators, and in the analysis section, I noted trends and highlighted examples of SDE (or lack thereof) in the campaign thus far. I found that SDE was lacking in the beginning of the campaign, however there has been increasing SDE in the RFC UMaine campaign over the past three years.
